Modern City Garden 2006

This project involved the additions of a porch, fencing, landscape and outdoor fireplace to an 1880’s eclectic style house in Newport, KY. The main idea was to add and mix modern components with the original historic house. New fencing, made of naturally rusting steel panels, sits on a steel frame with wood latticework to the exterior. Paved in the 1880’s, the sidewalks and walkways in this neighborhood are 8” thick slabs of natural stone. To pay homage to this historical detail, I specified poured concrete at the new terrace. I then carefully prescribed the placement of control joints to echo the original sandstone sidewalk slabs. A corrugated resin and steel frame canopy provides cover between the garage and new covered porch. This project is an excellent example of how small modern components can enhance a historic home.
